Business Car Finance: What Do I Need to Know?
One commonly asked question is, “what term should I finance the car over and what balloon should I have?” This is a very broad question and the answer will vary depending on the individual business’s vehicle requirements and usage.
Key points to consider are:
- How many kilometres do you travel each year?
- Is there a timeframe in which you’d like to upgrade to a new model, i.e. every 4 years?
Then do some research on what a similar make and model vehicle is selling for secondhand at that time. A work vehicle is a necessity for many businesses but does not generate income and therefore it’s important that you don’t structure a balloon on a vehicle that will not be worth that same value at the end of the finance contract. If this does happen you will be looking to finance negative equity into the new vehicle and may need to take cash out of the business’s workings to pay the shortfall from the sale or trade, so it is best to avoid this where possible.
